One Direction are one of the biggest boy bands in the world right now. After competing and finishing third on UK’s X-Factor, the group became a hit with girls around the world and were signed by Simon Cowell’s record label, Syco. The five-member British/Irish boy band is made up of Harry Styles, 17, Niall Horan, 18, Zayn Malik, 18, Louis Tomlinson, 19, and Liam Payne, 18.
Each member auditioned for the reality competition show as solo contestants, but failed to qualify for the Boys category. Nicole Scherzinger luckily came to the rescue, suggesting they be put into a group. And thus, One Direction was born. Since X-Factor, the group have released a book, Dare to Dream: Life as One Direction and their first single, “What Makes You Beautiful”, released in September, broke the pre-order sales record for Sony Music, selling over 153,000 copies in the first week of it’s release, as well as peaking at #1 in Ireland, Scotland and the United Kingdom.
