Eight months after she left rehab for bulimia and depression, Demi Lovato has made a strong comeback, releasing her third album, Unbroken on September 20.
Introducing a new R&B and pop vibe, Unbroken opens with the club-thumping, Timbaland produced “All Night Long” featuring Missy Elliot. “Who’s That Boy” featuring Dev, the albums second single, is a catchy standout tune about finding that special someone during a night out.
The second half of the album takes a different approach, as Demi told Ryan Seacrest, “I’m singing about some issues that I’ve never even spoken about before.” Slower standouts like “Fix A Heart”, in which Demi sings, “I ended up with wounds to bind, Like you’re pouring salt in my cuts, And I just ran out of Band-Aids, I don’t even know where to start” shine through alongside painful, raw and emotional ballads “Skyscraper” and “For The Love of a Daughter”.
Speaking with MTV News about Unbroken, the teen pop sensation said, “I think it’s grown-up, but it’s not too grown-up. It’s not tasteless. It’s growing up with my fans. It’s [like] I’m not a kid anymore, but I’m also not a full-grown woman either. So I’m in that in-between stage, trying to figure out where that is. So I’m figuring it out, just like my fans are.”
Despite her rough year, the former Disney star has turned her pain and struggles into triumph. As a positive role model and inspiration for young women for her strength and honesty, the talented Demi Lovato has proven she is far from broken and is here to stay.
